Hello. Julie Abel here again with The Courageous Leader Show. Today, we’re continuing the topic about choice and understanding that the choice for the things that you do in your life is yours. I was working with a client this week whose manager had asked her to come up with a list of jobs that she’d like to do next. When she realized that she had a choice in the matter, one of the most important things that she did was make a list of the choices. She thought about what do I want to do next and wrote them down in a list, shared them with me, and then went through the list with me. When we went through the list, she realized that there were some things she was not interested in and there were some things that she really, really loved.

So, it’s important to not only understand that the choice of what you do in your career and your life is your choice. If you want to work for the company you’re working for, that’s your choice. And it’s also your choice to decide what’s next. A critical step is to write down what you want, go back, look at the list, work with a coach, have some insight about the choices that you make. I’d like to invite you to step into being a courageous leader and create the impactful career and life you desire with clarity, alignment, and focus. You can follow me at julieabelcoaching.com.

Choice

We’re going to talk about choice today. The definition of choice is the act of making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. And I think the most important word in that sentence is act. It’s important to realize that when you make a decision that’s an action and when you don’t make a decision you’re also acting by not making that decision.

For example, two weeks ago I reached out to my coach and said, “… I’m really frustrated with something that’s going on in my business, can you help me?” And she said, “Okay, what’s going on?” I explained it to her and then she said, “Why do you keep choosing this? Why do you keep choosing not to do something?” And I realized that not doing is also a choice.

I’d like you to think about today, where in your career next steps are you making a choice and making a decision? And where are you actually making a choice not to make a decision and not to take action? When you’re ready to take action, I’d like to invite you to step into being a courageous leader and create the impactful career and life you desire, with clarity, with alignment, and with focus.

Hi there. I’m Julie Abel, and I’m the host of the Courageous Leader show. This is a video show where leaders can come learn about how to get clarity in their careers and their lives in order to expand their vision and create the extraordinary life they desire. Today’s topic is about starting over.

About a week ago, I found myself in a position that many leaders find themselves in. You’ve gotten behind. You’ve just been really crazy busy, and you’re staring at a pile of work, and it doesn’t seem like there’s any hope in sight. What I did is I wrote myself a permission slip to basically start over at that minute and that day. So, this says, “For Julie,” the date was September 4th, and I gave myself permission to start over. It really changed my whole attitude. It allowed me to open up the space and figure out what was most important and reprioritize what was happening with my work, and it really allowed me to let go of the feeling of being behind and the frustration and allowed for the openness of starting over.

Where in your life do you think would be a great place to start over? Could it be your email? Could it be taking your entire email box, archiving it, and starting over? You still have all of the old emails, but it allows you the opportunity to start over. Do you need to start over on a specific project? Do you need to start over maybe with your fitness or your exercise? What I’d like for you to do today is find one area that would feel so refreshing to start over in and literally write yourself a permission slip. Write permission at the top of it, write your name and the date, and give yourself permission to start over. I hope you liked the topic today.

Until next time, I’m Julie Abel the founder of the Courageous Leader show, and I’m encouraging you to take your leadership to the next level and go out and make a difference in the world. My Journey

Once upon a time…

There was a woman standing with her nose against the glass wall gazing out at the autumn leaves wondering how she got here.  She wanted something different so badly she felt like running away but she also knew that she would have no idea where to take the first step.

She was tired, cranky, and when her dad walked up to her and said “I would love to know what you are thinking”.  She heard herself say “I’m ready to do something different” without having an idea about how to do that or even what she wanted to do.

She felt stuck in her awesome life.  She had everything that she thought she wanted – a husband, three kids, a big house in the suburbs, the seemingly perfect job.  But, what she wanted in her 20’s wasn’t what she wanted anymore.

Here’s the thing: Just fine wasn’t good enough anymore.

She didn’t want to run away from her life but thought that if she could just take a break and figure out who she was and what she wanted, then maybe she would smile more and laugh.

She was working all day long for everyone else.  Where is the time for her?  She was bored to death with her job – not the playing with the kids or raising them, but the never-ending dishes, laundry, cleaning.  She got what she had wanted for so long, but now she didn’t know if she wanted it anymore or what to do about that feeling.

Maybe you can relate to this feeling – that everything on paper looks amazing. You SHOULD feel fulfilled, and satisfied and happy – but for some reason you’re not. If someone asks how you’re doing, you say, ‘oh, fine’ – but inside you want to feel more than fine.

You want to feel excited, and engaged and happy about your life. You want that zest back.

I can relate because, that woman was me.

One of my clients thought he had the perfect job but he was away from his family and was working with some unethical colleagues. There were pieces of his life he loved – but pieces he really didn’t.

Another client is an awesome bossy woman that will help you grow your business in a way that you didn’t even know it could grow, but she’d been told for so long that she was ugly and she didn’t believe she was beautiful. But her beauty just radiates whenever you see her – and she’s learning to see that inside herself too.

Another client has been stuck in a well-paid corporate job that she’s really, REALLY good at but no longer gives her a sense of purpose. At her heart she’s a storyteller. She weaves amazing stories in digital media. I help her to see past her own fears – including getting out of her own way, to create a life filled with purpose and adventure.

I work with high performing, competent people who are no longer willing to settle for ‘just fine’ anymore. They’ve come to a place of ‘is this it?’ – and that’s not good enough.

I help them to carve a new path for themselves – a more enriching, fulfilling and filled with things they want and they care about.

That’s what I did for myself. That’s what I do for my clients.

That’s what I want for you.

Take The First Step

“Take the first step in faith, you don’t have to see the whole staircase.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here is what I know about you.  In your 20’s you started a career path and followed that path.

You worked hard.

You found success.

You carved out a career.

You worked harder.

You climbed the staircase.

You became an expert.

Now 5, 10, 15, 20 years later, your career and your current job, well, it’s just fine.  You like your boss.  Or not.  You like your co-workers.  Most of the time.  Your email box is too full.  Your clients aren’t interested or interesting.

Taking The First Step

You wonder “is this all there is?”

You start to think that this life and career isn’t really what you imagined.

You don’t have time to think about what you wanted when you started.

You want to be done and just move on.

You don’t like where you are but you don’t know what to do next.

I’m happy.  I’m not happy.  Sometimes in the same minute/hour/day.

Here’s the thing: Just fine isn’t good enough anymore.

You want to do something different

You don’t know what you want to do. Or maybe you do.

You just know that you don’t like what you are doing.

Is this you?

I know I want something else and I know where I want to go

Or is this you?

I know I want something else and I don’t know where I want to go.

This was me.  I wanted something else in my career and I had no idea where to start.  So I started with the first step.  I made a list of all of the things that I wanted in my next career.  Everything.  Even the ability to work with people who want to make a difference in the world.  One of my clients put flip flops on her list.  Another client has global travel on his list.  Just write your ‘what I want list’ today.

What if you have no idea what you want?  Then make a list of what you don’t want.  One client has not punching a time clock on her list.  Another client has not working with an unethical board of directors.  My list has not having to live and die by my email.

You can absolutely do this first step.  I have faith in your first step ability.  Just take the first step and only the first step.
